To write a separate post about all MaWAW’s summer activities would take too long. From an early summer BBQ party to a fabulous Freerun Show on London’s Southbank, fun in the sun (when it came out!) at our youth and families beach trip, a wonderful afternoon of music and learning at the Polka Theatre, a dizzy day at Thorpe Park, and a very wet Watersports afternoon – I think all 150 participants may need another summer holiday, it’s been a summer PACKED FULL OF FUN!…

20th Anniversary celebrations on the 21 September July 2011.

Merton and Wandsworth Asylum Welcome will be celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary on 21 September 2011, from 18.00 – 21.00. The venue will be the Church of St. Mary and St. John, Balham High Road, London SW12 9BS. Those attending will have the opportunity to hear from clients of the drop-in service and young people from our youth support project and founding and long serving trustees will also reflect on the past 20 years. Come along and enjoy a great evening of music, food and and international costumes (with a prize!).

Refugee Week celebrations on the 22nd and 23rd June 2011.

South London Refugee Association will be celebrating Refugee Week in their Merton and Wandsworth Drop-In Centres on the 22nd and 23rd June 2011 respectively. We have invited both the Mayor’s of Merton and Wandsworth to attend and give a brief speech. Food and refreshments will be served. Students from Bishopsford School will be performing.

The fifth in the series of Merton and Wandsworth Asylum Welcome’s Country Briefings was delivered by Brian Mitchell, Senior Advisor at Notre Dame Refugee Centre, and Outreach Advisor at Wandsworth Asylum Welcome. The briefing covere: Background information on DRC (political. colonial, geographical, languages spoken, diet, music etc; The current situation in the country and possible future prospects and the migration of Congolese nationals.

Thames Boat Trip & Planetarium – October 2010

In October 2010, clients from both drop-ins enjoyed an eventful day which began with a trip to the Thames Barrier. This was followed by lunch in Greenwich and a show at the Planetarium. The 90 clients who attended thoroughly enjoyed the outing.

MaWAW AGM & Annual Report

MaWAW held its AGM on the 27th November 2010. Those attending the event had the opportunity to heard about both the progress the organisation has made and the challenges which lie ahead. Testimonies from service users proved insightful and a Sri-Lankan lunch was provided by volunteers from the centre. West Witterings beach – August 2010

West Witterings beach

Over 100 people enjoyed a wonderful day of sunshine (and showers!) at West Wittering beach in August. Families and young people enjoyed kite-making, football, swimming, cricket, picnicking and walking on the beach before returning exhausted to London.

Refugee Week – June 2010

Refugee Week celebrations proved eventful in both drop-ins this year. Wimbledon saw a plentiful buffet with foods from around the world cooked by clients at the centre, a presentation from young people at Bishopsford School and a speech from the Deputy Major of Merton. Whilst Balham was graced by the lyrics of resident artist and volunteer Bruce, a vast multi-cultural buffet and a speech by the Wandsworth Mayor.

Shabibi Shah – Afganistan Country Briefing

Author Shabibi Shah delivered the fourth in our series of country briefings on Afganistan. Drawing on her own experience Shabibi discussed issues of gender, politics and culture, which proved extremely informative for those who attended.

Painshill Park – May 2010

Feedback from Painshill park suggests that it was enjoyed by all who attended. We had a beautiful day, and the 85 people who attended enjoyed the calming scenery got stuck into camp-building and pond-dipping.
